How To Handle Negative People

It is said that you should choose friend wisely and be careful about who you are associating with in your life. Because those who surround you will impact your attitude and belief in the way that you may not be aware. That said negative and positive people can affect you oppositely. If you hang out with negative people long enough, they will somehow drain your energy.

Why should you stay away from negative people?

1.    Negative people always give you negative feedbacks.

Imagine when you told someone about a new goal that you want to achieve, saying, travel three different countries in two years, how negative ones talked to you. They said that it was impossible and you were setting the bar too high or things like that. They dragged you to the dark side right after hearing about your new goal. One of the reasons is they are in the darkest place and they want you to be there too. Unfortunately, those negative feedbacks can somehow affect your thinking. You start to rethink about what you’ve decided and even change your belief system, which is bad.

In life, there’s times when you have to face the diversity that you desperately need a positive person to encourage you and tell you that you can do that, not someone does the opposite.

2.    Hanging with negative people won’t provide encouragement.

Negative people are the energy drainers. Instead of encouraging you, they are full of pessimistic thoughts easily to be spread to discourage you. I myself have a toxic coworker with her I have to make conversation every day to get the job done. Every time I talked about things that we have to complete, papers that we should fill in time, she said that there always had so much stuff that we cannot fulfill the deadline. Not to mention she talked back our boss all the time she had to work seriously which is very rare.

The bad news is that she, as other negative people are so good at discouraging and giving other feedbacks and making those negative viewpoints sound like they make sense.

3.    Negative people damage your credibility and they are hard to get rid of.

“Tell me who your friends are, I will tell you who you are.” Most of the time, other people will judge you by the people you associate with. The ones who always give negative feedback and discourage other are not a good choice for making friends and keeping contact. I’ve been being friend with a girl since I was 12. At that time, I didn’t know what a positive and negative people look like and how they could impact on my life. For now, I can truly understand what I should about others surrounding me, and I can understand how negative my friend is. But unfortunately, I cannot stop contacting her since the feeling of loyalty. She is so hard to get rid of.

how to cope with negative people

How to handle negative people?

Because life is too short, we should never waste time on hanging with negative people so as to make our life miserable. By means of this, you all want to live a happy and quality life with quality people, hence you should contact more with those who full of positive thoughts and encouragement. Not only bringing you toxic thoughts, they also reinforce anything negative that you say. They are really good at providing you reasons why those toxic assumptions are right and making you believe in doubts. Below are some of the most effective ways to handle them.

1.    Lending them a helping hand though don’t get into any argument with a negative person.

Bearing in mind so many negative thoughts and stagnations will not make you grow. Those who don’t want to grow don’t want you to grow too. If you have a negative friend, try to give them some of your positive thoughts. Explain to them how possible their plans are and they can do them if they truly want.  Try to empathize with them because many of them even are not conscious of their pessimistic thinking trend. Take the onus to lend a helping hand will make you more strong.

2.    Stick to light topics and ignore negative comments when needed.

Though negative people give negative comments most of the time, even when talking about very clear and possible things, sticking to light topics may reduce their frequency. In case the conversation turns to tense, just don’t get into any further argument since they won’t change their thoughts and belief system no matter what you say. It’s better ignore it and drive your conversation to a more positive way.

Many negative people are not aware of their toxic thinking and their complaints turn out to be a sign of crying for help. Then you can give them a helping hand. I know that not many of them receive and appreciate your help. One of my friend who is very self-criticizing whenever we talk about his job. I tried to help him a lot, but it doesn’t work. With those kind people, you have no choice but avoiding them so that your thoughts do not become so negative as theirs.

3.    Reduce contact with them.

You think about good things that are about to happen. You always have your foot on the gas pedal with full of energy. However, you are surrounded by negative people who have their foot on the brake. They will help you nothing but discouraging you. Stay away from them when needed. Life is short and you don’t need more sorrowful or gloomy scenarios.

That’s some of my thoughts on why you should stay away from negative people as well as how to cope with them to avoid making your life more miserable. You may agree, you may disagree, either the way I hope to hear from you. If you have any comment, please leave it below.
